Pon Pon Chapel of Ease

Established in 1725 along the busy stage route between Charleston and Savannah, the Chapel served St. Bartholomew’s Parish in South Carolina. The Chapel hosted two sermons in 1737 by Rev. John Wesley (founder of Methodist Church, coiner of the phrase “agree to disagree”, and ranked #50 of most influencial Brits.) before he was run out of Savannah that December. The brick church replaced the original wooden structure in 1754. After a fire in 1801, it became known as “Burnt Church” and was rebuilt in 1822 only to burn down again in 1832. Restoration work is being conducted by the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society.
